Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths.

In the U.S. drowning takes an average of 3,500-4,000 lives per year. That is an average of 10 fatal drownings per day. 

 

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury related death for children ages 1-4. 

 

Drowning remains in the top 5 causes of unintentional injury related death from birth to 54 years old.

It takes 60 seconds for an adult to drown but the odds are even worse when it comes to kids – it takes only 20 seconds for a child to drown, according to US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
